I can confirm that this change works on SuSE 10.0 x86_64 to access mono
repository. I disabled unicode, and then was able to add the channel:

#smart channel --add mono type=red-carpet \
baseurl=http://go-mono.com/download/mono/suse-100-x86_64

The update and upgrade process went smooth.
