It's totally different, it's a metadata format of its own.
- From 10.0 on, YaST2's package manager module also supports rpm-md repositories, but YaST2 on <= 9.3
doesn't.

That's not the issue though (after all, we're talking about using smart and not yast2 ;)), but the
original repositories of SUSE Linux are published as YaST2 repositories.
