No, the correct behavior is exactly what you expect: Smart should only
reset the 'new' flag when you ask it to update your channels.

I cannot reproduce the issue you mentioned though. If possible, would
you please be able to pay attention to the exact sequence of actions
you take to produce the problem, if you see it again? I'll be glad to
fix it, if I manage to understand how to reproduce it.
