That's the correct behavior. If it has multiple choices, it gets
the most adequate one to the system you're running. If the i386 package
has a dependency that is only satisfiable by some i386 package, and
the x86_64 package is being installed, it means that the packaging is
broken.
As a real example to explain the issue, if a random i386 package
requires /bin/sh, should the i386 version of bash be installed?
