linux_learner - I think that the hanging problem is unrelated to this issue - if
it's not specifically about rpm-md repositories being very slow, then it should
go into a different bug/issue.

However, I suspect threading issues (rpm has a long and glorious history of
being very thread sensitive).  Consider using this:

LD_ASSUME_KERNEL="2.4.0" <invoke smart here>
