Yes,  I'm now sure this particular error was the result of corrupted packages
resulting from killing smart during a "committing transactions" stall and then
restarting smart.  There really does seem to be a problem that occurs during
"committing transactions." Stalls of hours are hard to sit through, though some
report that if you wait long enough smart will finish.  Stalls seem to occur
more often during updates of large numbers of packages, but sometimes even when
only one package is updated.  The problem does not seem to be version dependent
from 0.40-10 to 0.40-12.
