update to smart 0.42-6 for SUSE (using smart 0.42-5)

Answering myself:

rz36:~ # smart config --set rpm-check-signatures=false

rz36:~ # smart install smart smart-gui

and everything is fine. I found this on the german SUSE Linux mailing list
(smart will nicht so richtig - Probleme mit keys?)

But this was with other packages, so it may be a problem of smart indeed.
