Default socket timeout (was: Smart is hiccupping)

Worth questioning why the default is that high.
120 seconds, that's a lot... Wouldn't 30sec be more appropriate ?
Especially when you have a vast number of mirrors. I would even put it
down to 10sec (which is only appropriate for a DSL or cable internet
connection though - with a modem, that's a little low ;))
