[issue129] Smart Crashes during database update on Suse 10.0 x86_64

I have been successfully running Smart on a SuSE 10.0 AMD x86-64 box with KDE
3.5.1.  All was well until Smart updated itself to 0.41.  Now, I start the
program with either smart --shell or smart --gui and I will eventually receive
the following error message:
