If any kind of encritption would be implemented, it could be easily broken,
since the algorithm would be wide open. (Or maybe my encription skills are dumb
enough not to see a solution here).

One simple way you can do it for now is informing the user name, but NOT the
password, so Smart will ask you the password everty time it tries to connect to
the rep, although I never tried to make sure. Could you check that?
