bloat - CPU load

I know what's wrong. The fetcher was implemented in the most
flexible and straightforward way, without taking the needed
time to implement it with a reactor-based approach.  We
(or anyone really) just have to fix it by refactoring the
code into an event based system.

While my own brain cycles are taken, and no one steps up to
refactor it, he'll have to burn his CPU cycles, or find
something else.
