smart 0.50rc1-7 ok @ shell, GUI fails

i'm confused a bit.

as i'd mentioned in my post, i'm running on 10.1.

to the best of my knowledge, i've not installed *anything* from 10.2.

i'm certainly open to the posiibility that something's borked, but
it's not by (my) design.
