error: System has no support for gtk python interface

First I have to say that I have had no problems with smart till now.
Great job everyone.

But after an upgrade a couple of days ago I get

hydrogen:/home/dave # smart --gui
error: System has no support for gtk python interface

python-gtk is installed.
yes the gui did work before.

system is

SuSE 10.1
smart-0.42-12.guru.suse101 at i686 + the gui and addons

Any help with this would be appreciated.
