[issue285] smart gui puts high load on X server when downloading

New submission from Roman Fietze <rfsm at fietze-home.de>:

Running smart --gui puts a load of more than 30% CPU on a 500MHz Pentium while
downloading packages. The application using that CPU is the X server, the load
is probably caused by the progress bar updates.

The traffic to the X server at that moment is more than 300 KiB/s.

This does not seem a lot, but when I update a few client boxes at the same time
using the gui, this quickly adds up, even on faster machines than mine. So it's
not really a bug, but it would be nice to have that "problem" solved.
