smart proxy not working correctly?

I had no idea you could do this at all.

I didn't even know there WAS a smart proxy setting. Therefore, I've been 
unable to update my machines via SMART from behind the proxy at work.  

However, since I do not have a proxy at home, I can see this would fail.
