Channel priorities - what am I doing wrong?

Hi, another question:
I have a local and a remote channel with roughly the same content.
I'd like to use packages from the local channel, if they are there. To
achieve that, I gave the remote channel a priority of -1. This does
not work.
How can I achieve that aim?
For reference, my test case: Even though xselection is both available
in channels DVD and opensuse (the latter having priority -1), it's
downloaded from opensuse. I would have expected that it's taken
straight from channel DVD, having the higher priority.
