[issue374] Possible arch specific problems on s390x

We want to use smart to install additional packages on an s390x machine at IBM.
It seems that there is some sort of arch specific problem because very basic
operations seem to fail. I tested the same commands on a Power machine and these
commands worked well. Both machines running rhel 4 update 4.
I know it will be probably difficult to reproduce without a s390x machine around
but if someone can provide tips regarding the error message that would help
