[issue377] New Channel doesn't get created from URL

in Smart 0.52 on SuSE 10.3, I do:
Edit/Channel/New/Read channel description from URL
http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/10.3

The operation progress window shows reasonable activity, but the channel doesn't
get added to the list of channels.
