Sorry, wrong again. The patch was added to the package, not do the
program itself. If Niemeyer patched the program, it would require a new
sub release (like 0.40.1, for example). In this specific case, the patch
was available on the mailing list, and Pascal took the liberty to aplly
it on the curren version of Smart (0.40) on it's own package. Smart it
self didn't changed at all (the patch has not been applied to the CVS
tree yet).

Of course when you report bugs you need to inform the program version
and the source from where you have it installed. That being said, it's
possible to identify if some patch has been applied or not.

As an example, smart-0.40-6mdk from Mandriva (guessing) doesn't have the
patch applied, and I'm sure they won't apply it at all (since the
problem doesn't affect that distro). But, if there were some bug
regarding urpmi (their type of channel) they would probably have a patch
applied which wouldn't exist on guru's package.

Again, the program itself never changed, it's still on 0.40. The
difference is that Pascal applied a patch on current version with some
code that will be available on next release of Smart.

smart query smart --installed

But unfortunately this still doesn't avoid cache loading. I'm not sure
if disabling cache update when querying for installed packages could
lead to any problem. Maybe Niemeyer is the right person to comment on
that.
