Basically, this is a transcript of what happened:
I asked smart to install OpenOffice_org (ok)
I asked smart to remove kdenetwork3-InstantMessenger (ok)
I asked smart to upgrade smart* (ok)
I issued 'commit'.
smart started downloads, including a download for kdentwork3-InstantMessenger!

smart> install Openoffice_org

Installing packages (1):
  OpenOffice_org-2.0.2-27.12 at i586

102.2MB of package files are needed. 265.5MB will be used.

smart> remove kdenetwork3-InstantMessenger

Removing packages (1):
  kdenetwork3-InstantMessenger-3.5.1-32 at i586

  smart-gui-0.42-5.guru.suse101 at i686
