One thing should be considered here: how much memory do you have?

The amount shown here is 28% of the total vailable memory.

Take my workstation with 384MB as an example:

root 9882 40.1 18.0 61984 58000 pts/4 S+ 14:49 0:16
/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/smart --shell

# smart query | wc -l
9191

OTOH, this is on a server with 768MB:

root 6795 29.7 4.9 41768 38112 pts/2 R+ 14:54 0:05
/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/smart --shell

# smart query | wc -l
9191
