Are you using my smart on SUSE Linux 10.1 betaX (with x = {1,2,3})? Could you
please try to clean/remove all the cache files in /var/lib/smart/ and add some
more notes on "how to reproduce"?

(It might really be due to "only" 256 MB of RAM, but that would be quite
surprising.)
