web based is an option. but that might require a daemon (not sure on that). it
would certainly require smart to listen on a particular port from local host
(mush the same way X listens to port 6000). 

i am more concerened with the current gui. gtk is fine. i'm not asking for that
to be changed, but the way the gui is organized maybe?

maybe like this:

Games>
Multimedia>
Internet>
Development>
System>
etc.....

just an example. its pretty straight forward and the nagiation is simple. of
course in any of those you could further break it down into sub-catagories.

example:

Multimedia>
   audio players>
   video players>
   cd/dvd burning>

whatever.
