One of the main things I like about yum, is an add-on called pakiti (used to
be called yumit). Nightly checks are run in the normal way, but are logged to
a MySQL database which can be viewed via a webpage, so you can see which
systems (almost any linux based systems) which need updating from a webpage.

I think one of the reasons pakiti changed its name, is that it may not be
focussed on yum updates anymore but may be extended to apt/smart, all it needs
is for the client software to log updates to a MySQL database, and people can
then view it.

I've also been told pakiti is out of beta and the full release will be
available in a few days.

Note that in y situation, I never use X on Linux, as my machines are never
locally accessible so I live in shell. However, I find web-based "reporting"
and "management" tools invaluable to manage my systems remotely, which is why
I tend to opt to web-based implementations/tools of anything I use.

Regards,

Michael.
