That did the trick.  I had looked in various documentation and didn't
find this little tidbit.  In fact, the only channel that is added by
default (at least by suse 10.1) is the rpm-sys channel.  I also tried
using the mirror channel type (drop the last /suse/ dir from the url),
and that worked as well.
