I verified that the change (turn returns_unicode off) fix the reported issue.
That was tunred on in r416 (07 Dec 2004). I wonder if redcarpet support is
broken in general since then or only the specific mono channel? I attach a diff
but I really don't know enough about this code to make a judgment.
