If you logged in as a regular user, then switched to root, you would need "xhost
+" before "su". Can you check that?

If it's not the case, can you tell confirm if the display python tries to use
(:1.0) is the same as the vnc server (:1 or 5901), and the same as the one from
DISPLAY env var?
