Your magic incantation was correct:

[developer at lfs ~]$ sudo xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
[developer at lfs ~]$ sudo su -
[root at lfs ~]# pwd
/root
[root at lfs ~]# smart --gui

The 0.41 gui opens
