[issue237] smart hangs when upgrading the whole system

wanted to clarify that it doesn't really hang, it just not progressing anywhere.
it takes 100% cpu and strace shows only a lot of 'brk' calls

netstat and lsof didn't show anything (no connection to the repositories, no
open files other than the ordinary)
