configuration in read-only mode

Thanks.  I'll give this a try.  Looking around elsewhere, I found other 
reports that ksmarttray sometimes gets hung up (locking the database in 
the process), which prevents smart --gui from doing its work.  Quitting 
ksmarttray and THEN running smart --gui seemed to solve the problem I had.
