smart 0.50 stopped working

The in-development version wouldn't fail like that, but give you
a meaningful error.  This error most probably means that you have
a corrupted channel file downloaded. Can you please try to remove
your channel files (rm /var/lib/smart/channels/*) and then update
again (smart update)?
