I think the problem is just that you are interpreting "remove" and
"upgrade" differently than how smart does ;)

If you do "remove kernel-source", "commit" and "upgrade", it will work
as you expect.

But to me, it seems that smart is just considering your "upgrade" to
cancel the "remove" (because it isn't removed yet).
Might be considered a bug, depends, other people could expect smart's
current behaviour to be exactly what they wanted it to do.
Personally, I'd rather agree with your expectation/interpretation though.

Nothing dramatic, probably rather an enhancement than a bug, you can do
"remove, commit, upgrade" as a workaround.
I'd favour a fix though, but there are higher priorities IMO.
