YUM sources (XML files) are known to be slow to parse, specially with
huge channels, so maybe it's your issue. Check those:

BTW, is there any APT repository for Fedora? We're getting many
complains coming from Fedora users (but not from SUSE, which also has
YUM repos, but Smart outperforms the official tools, ZenWorks, in this
case).
