I can't help with the cause of the problem, but can comment that it does
not fit my experience.  Running opensuse 10.1 with latest smart gui, I
have monitored cpu use simultaneously with both top and gkrellm.  Both
tell me that smart sometimes peaks at near 10%, but averages no more
than 5% during updates.  That is for just one cpu, and the second cpu
remains untouched on my dual-core, dual xeon workstation.  This is a
loooooongggg shot, but maybe you need more ram? :-/
